Scam Call of the Week: Business Listing Impersonation

Small business owners are facing a new wave of fraudulent robocalls that pretend to be from trusted platforms like Google, Apple, and Bing. These calls claim your business is not ranking on Google Maps or local searches, warning that potential customers “can’t find you.” The message then pushes you to “press 4” for help boosting your visibility.

In reality, this is a classic impersonation scam designed to steal your personal information or sign you up for worthless services. The callers are not affiliated with any legitimate business listing service. Their goal is to exploit common concerns about online visibility and pressure you into taking action.

How the Scam Works

The call begins with a recording from the so-called “Local Maps team.” The voice message warns that your business is missing from local search results and offers a quick fix. The instructions push you to press a number to connect with a “specialist.” But if you engage, you risk exposing sensitive details or paying for fraudulent services that will not help your business.

Here is a typical transcript:
“Hi, this is the Local Maps team. Your business isn’t ranking on Google Maps and local searches, which means customers can’t find you. We help small businesses show up at the top when people search services near me. Press 4 now to boost your visibility and get more clients. Press 5 to opt out or call (866) 780-7485.”
