Scam Call of the Week: Walmart Pre-Authorized Purchase Online Order

Another week, another scam. This time, fraudsters are using a fake Walmart order confirmation to trick people into responding. The robocall claims that a PlayStation 5 and headset have been purchased from your account for over $900. Naturally, most people would want to cancel a suspicious charge like that, and that’s exactly what scammers are counting on.

Let’s break down how this scam works, why it’s effective, and how to protect yourself and your family.

What the Scam Sounds Like

The call begins with a robotic voice:

“Hey, this is Amelia from Walmart. A pre-authorized purchase of PlayStation 5 with special edition and Pulse 3D headset is being ordered from your Walmart account for an amount of $919.45. To cancel your order or to connect with one of our customer support representatives, please press 1.”

The message is designed to alarm. There’s urgency, a high-dollar amount, and a clear prompt to press 1 and talk to someone. But that “customer support representative” is no one from Walmart. It’s a scammer hoping to trick you into providing personal or financial information.

Who’s Being Targeted?

This scam has been hitting phones across the U.S., with particularly high activity in Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Georgia. That’s not surprising: robocallers tend to blanket heavily populated states with these types of messages to improve their chances of success.

The scammers behind this campaign are also using a variety of phone numbers, including:

  • 1-000-000-0000 (often marked as private or blocked)

If you’ve seen any of these numbers pop up recently, they may be linked to this scheme.

Why This Scam Works

The scammers are impersonating a trusted brand, using familiar language like “pre-authorized purchase” to make the message seem legitimate. They also rely on the fear of losing money to rush you into acting without thinking. By pressing 1, you open the door to a live scammer who may ask for:

  • Your full name
  • Your credit card or banking info
  • Remote access to your device
  • Verification codes or account credentials

None of this is needed to cancel a real Walmart order—but if you’re not familiar with the tactics, it can be easy to get pulled in.

How to Stay Safe

If you receive this call, do not press 1. Hang up immediately. Then, take these steps:

  • Check your Walmart account directly by logging in through the official website. If no such purchase exists, you know it was a scam.
  • Review your bank and credit card activity to confirm nothing suspicious has occurred.
  • Report the call to the FTC and mark the number as spam in your call settings.
